a)Acid rain: Atmospheric precipitation with pH values less than 5.6 due to inorganic acids (such as nitric and sulphuric) formed when oxides of nitrogen and sulphur are emitted into the atmosphere.
b)Acid sulphate soils: Soils that are potentially extremely acid with a pH less than 3.5 because of the presence of large amounts of reduced forms of sulphur that are oxidised to sulphuric acid if the soils are exposed to oxygen when they are drained or excavated. A sulphuric horizon containing the yellow mineral Jarosite is often present.
c)Active acidity: The activity of hydrogen ions in the aqueous phase of a soil. It is measured and expressed as a pH value.
