Describe digestion process in birds?

After the bird has swallowed, the food moves down the esophagus and then to the crop. The crop stores excess food to enable the bird to digest it slowly. The food then moves to the proventriculus, which is the first part of the stomach. The food is softened by gastric acid, mucus and other digestive juices. The gizzard grinds the food into little pieces with the help of grit such as sand or small stones the bird has swallowed before. If the food is very tough, it might move between the proventriculus and the gizzard many times for more effective digestion. After the food is sufficiently broken down it moves into the small intestine where the liver and pancreas aid with absorbing nutrients. It then moves to the large intestine. The large intestine is very short in most birds. The small and large intestines join to form the ceca. These are two pouches that help absorb any leftover water from the food and finish the digestive process.
