(i) Regions with less vegetation experience more surface run-off, reducing the infiltration.

(ii) The presence of vegetation also increases retention of underground water by providing shade on the ground, and reducing direct loss of water from the ground through evaporation.

(iii) The presence of vegetation cover increases the amount of water infiltrating the ground and ultimately the amount of underground water reservoir. Vegetation breaks the speed of raindrops falling on the ground. This enables water to reach the gently and have time to infiltrate. Vegetation reduces the speed of surface run-off and thus increases infiltration as well.
