It is based on de-Broglie hypothesis. A beam of accelerated electrons behaves like wave.
This wave can be handled by electric and magnetic fields in exactly the same way as electromagnetic waves are handled by lenses. Thus, de-Broglie waves associated with electron can be used in electron microscope to obtain magnified image with atomic resolution.
