Where soil formation processes take a short duration the soils are generally immature. Where the process has taken a long period of time, soils are generally well-developed or mature. Young soils retain the characteristics of the parent rock because they have not been exposed to the factors that may cause change. Mature soils may not display the characteristics of the parent rock.
