When plants and animals die, they decay to form humus or organic matter. Micro-organisms in the soil assist in plant or animal decay to form humus. The micro-organisms mix and aerate the soils. The roots of plants penetrate the soil enabling it to become porous. Penetrating plant roots, ploughing or burrowing the rock breaks up the rock into small particles forming soils.
