Podzolization is a form of leaching which occurs in cool climates where the precipitation is higher than evaporation. The soils are sandy and well drained. The soils are heavily leached of all bases including calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, oxides of aluminium and iron, silica and sequin oxides. The dissolving is done by the organic acids that are formed when rain percolates through fallen vegetation such as the leaves of coniferous trees.
