A Rift valley is defined as a linear shaped lowland resulted from action of a geological rift of fault. The valley can be formed from tensional forces or Compressional forces acting on the earth crust forcing the earths plate to move apart.

Rift valley formation through tensional forces
This happens when Layers of the earth's crust are subjected to tensional forces. The forces act on the earth crust pulling it apart on either sides of a central block. As a result of this, fault lines are formed on the crust forcing the central block to subside due to its weight forming rift valley.
