• Ensure balanced diet in the school feeding programs. Nutrition is all about well-balanced and enough food intakes. Since most schools have feeding programs, the teacher should ensure that the food that children are taking observes such standards. Some children come from poverty stricken background and it is only in school that some may be able to access food. So to help such children, the teacher should ensure that the school provides balanced diet to children in all their meals.
• Health also encompasses body fitness. A teacher can therefore engage the children in physical activities where they can build their muscles and help keep their body fit at an early age. Physical education is important for health of the children. A teacher can engage children in running, jumping, singing and dancing and simple body exercises. This ensures children physical health is catered for. Also as far as physical health is concerned, the teacher should allow children to rest after they have had a long morning of vigorous activities. In this case, allowing children to sleep for a few hours in the afternoon is important for their health.
• Through parents’ meetings in school the teacher can use the opportunity to talk to parents on the importance of health and nutrition. The reason why some children experience poor health or don’t have access to a balanced diet is because of ignorance on the part of their parents. Some children are brought up by parents who are illiterate and who have no idea of what balanced diet and health practices entails. To help such parents to be able to practice healthy habits at home, the teacher can engage the parents on frequent discussion about health and nutrition through parent meetings in school. The teacher can do this by herself or still invite a guest speaker to speak to parents on the issues of health and nutrition.
• Talk to children about balanced diet during science activities and give them examples of a balanced diet food. Children can be good ambassadors and they will always talk to their parents what they have learned. Children have trust in their teachers and they will always want to do what the teacher says whether at home or at school. Therefore educating the children on the basics of good nutrition in simplest ways such as through class activities, they can practice this knowledge even at home and their parents will be learn from them and start practicing it too.
• Health also includes other things such as sanitation. A teacher can therefore teach and encourage children to practice hygiene at all times both at school and at home. Let them learn and know simple basic practices such as washing hands after visiting the restrooms and also before eating, using a handkerchief to wipe their noses etc. The teacher should go to an extent of explaining to the children the importance of such practices and why they are habits that should be practiced all the time anywhere they go.
