Holistic development entails all round development of a child including physical development, cognitive development, emotional (psychological) development and Social development,
Mathematics activity- Mathematics activity enhances cognitive development of a child. It introduces numeracy skills where it involves thinking. Thinking stimulates the brains hence enabling a child to develop cognitive skills where he is able to think and operate. Mathematics activity enables children to think and solve problems in their lives.
Language activity- Language enhances social development of the child. Language activity enables a child to develop communication skills whereby the child is able to learn how to speak and this helps the child to be able to socialize with other hence enhancing social development. A child who has developed language skills such as speaking can freely and easily interact with others during play and other social activities since they are able to understand one another. Language activity also enables children to express their needs. A child who has developed speaking or writing skills can communicate through written or spoken word about his or her needs.
Creative activity- Creative activity enhances emotional development of the child. Most children express their feelings and emotions through drawings and colors. Children are able to express their feelings through drawings. For instance a child can draw a picture to illustrate love, happiness or sadness. When a child is able to draw a picture with a smile on it is a sign that the child is happy. Creative activity also enhances fine muscles development in children. As they use items such as clay or plasticine to model objects, and crayons to colour drawings, their finger muscles (fine motor muscles develops).
Music and Movement activity- Music and movement also enhances emotional development of the child. Children sometimes use music to express their feelings towards people and things. They use music to communicate their feelings and emotions. Apart from emotional development, music also enhances social development in children. During singing and dancing, children mingle with one another and they are able to make friends.
Outdoor activity- Outdoor activity enhances physical development of the child. When children engage in activities such as jumping, running, hopping, ball kicking, ball throwing and jumping ropes, they are able to stretch their muscles and build their physique. These activities that involve vigorous body movement enable children to improve on their body fitness and enhance development of gross motor muscles in children.
Science activity- Science activity enhances development of senses in children. It helps stimulates children to be able to make use of their senses in the environment. Through science activities, children are able to use their senses such as sense of taste, smell, touch, sight and hearing. This enables children to be able to make sense of the things in the environment. Science activity enhances cognitive development in children as they are able to stimulate brains through critical thinking to be able to solve the mysteries within the environment they live in.
