Describe the social organization of the Akamba people during the pre-colonial period.

1. The Kamba people worshiped one supreme God (Ngai) who was believed to live up in the sky. The head of each family offered prayers daily at dawn and dusk.
2. Initiation into adulthood was carried out on both girls and boys.
3. Girls were taught domestic duties while boys were taught skills like herding, hunting and looking after the homestead.
4. In times of crisis, prayers were conducted from the village shrine.
5. Each village had its own medicineman who practised things like prophesying, rain making as well as officiating at religious functions.
6. The social organization was based on the family. Several families lived together in enclosed villages on hilltops.
