When a few drops of potassium permanganate are added to an aqueous solution of ferrous sulphate, solution turns brown. On the other hand, when the test is repeated using sodium molybdate instead of potassium permanganate no similar colour change is observed.

Potassium manganate is an oxidizing agent and therefore oxidizes iron (ii) ion to iron (iii) ion which turns the solution brown. Sodium molybdate on the other hand is not an oxidizing agent hence can not oxidize iron (ii) ion to iron (iii)
