There is intra-rural and inter-sectoral inequality in Kenya. This has increased conflict over resources among various ethnic groups in the country. Peasant farmers have been the victims of this inequality which favour large land owners. Poverty in Kenya is caused by landlessness. Yet land reforms are resisted in Kenya. Those who benefit from this situation are small minority living in urban areas.
Those who resist land changes are the rich bourgeoisie in urban areas and the political class. A well entrenched African elite with strong political connections controls large farms. This because in a poor nation like Kenya where they are only a few industries, the main outlet for wealth accumulation by Kenyans has been and remains land.
Land in Kenya is a sensitive political issue controlled by the rich. In the late 1970s (1978) Nakuru district had 40 farms with over 500 acres of land that were owned by individual Africans such as MPs, government administrators, senior police chiefs, county council officials, ambassadors, former chiefs company executives and big traders. The same applies to Kiambu district, a heavily populated region where the average land is only 0.5 hectares per person. 50% of land was owned by huge disparity in land ownership. These individuals accumulate capital from both their farms and other urban enterprises. This kind of structure, argues, Prof Migot-Adhola, has a dangerous impact on agricultural production in Kenya, worsening conflict. These telephone farmers in towns, enjoy the speculative value of their farms, while not exploiting their potential productivity. Some of the best land in Kenya has remained underutilized and completely neglected hence lack of food and employment.
