Rummel (1997) argues that the continuing increase in democracy worldwide will soon lead to an end of conflict and possibly around or even before the middle of the twenty first century. The fall of communism and the rise of democratic states led to a decline in total warfare.
Michael Shapiro, peace theorists believes that liberal democracies can peaceful manage various kinds or disputes and conflicts amongst themselves.
Russet (1993), argues that democratic culture affects the way leaders resolve conflicts. There is a theory that democracies should not fight each other.
Hobbes, a political theorist, argued that war originates from a combination of the greed and the inequality of human beings and the solution can only be a “social contract” dependent on the creation of authoritative institutions.
Strategies for peace and conflict studies (PACS)
Personal transformation - this is based on building unity. It advocates for peaceful environment for all mankind, an environment of no wars, hunger, homelessness, disease, violence, racism, no immoral TV commercials and pollution, people respect one another.
Non-violent action - Rejects the use of violence in efforts to attain social or - political change. It holds that power of rulers depends on the consent of the population. Without bureaucracy, the army or police force, the ruler is powerless. Non-violence seeks to undermine the power of the rulers through deliberate withdrawal of this consent and cooperation.
Non-violent communication - A total system of thinking and being that is profoundly egalitarian and non-authoritarian, compassionate in resolving conflict. Biased radio reports bring violence.
Religion and peace
World peace could be achieved if the religious teachings were followed without question. Today religion has become a portent tool of peace disruptions.
Political reforms - It goes with democratisation. Democracy is based on elections by free and secret ballot, respect of human rights, high capacity for dialogue, active citizenry, capacity for resolving conflicts. Bill Clinton “the best strategy is into ensure security and to build a durable peace is to support the advance of democracy elsewhere. Democracies don’t attack each other.”
