- The farm inputs are expensive such as fertilizers increase production cost and therefore reduce the farmers profit margins.
Unstable prices
- Fluctuating prices makes it hard for farmers to plan ahead and at times leads to losses
Climatic conditions
- Prolonged drought leads to the destruction of the crop hence low yields and losses to the farmer
Competition
- Flooding of the local market with cheap maize imports from COMESA countries and heavily subsidized maize from EU countries lowers market for local maize farmers.
- Pests and diseases
These include weevils that attack crops or harvested crops leading to destruction and hence losses to farmers.
