Some instances and circumstances in the story bring pain and suffering to some character in the story. However, they do not lose hope but endure it and life continues
Akoko become one of such characters who greatly suffer in the story.Getting children to her is not easy. Her in-laws are uncaring, greedy and covetous, they falsely accuse her of jouk witchcraft which makes her to return to her parents home.Later on in life, after the death of her husband, her brother in-law,Otieno grabs her late husbands wealth and threatens to grab her's too, this forces her to go to Kisuma to seek for justice from the Sirikal. Despite all these problems, Akoko remains to be kind, generous, loving, selfless and determined.
Nyabera just like her mother suffers too.she loses her brother Obura,Her children,a daughter at two years,a son called Sidande and another one,her father Chief Owour Kembo and later another two children she sires with Ogoma Kwach before. She decides to go to Alour Mission where she is baptized Maria,Despite all these challenges, she does not lose hope and continues to work for her daughter Elizabeth Awiti.
There is a lot of suffering for Elizabeth Awiti, especially when she joins college. It is because of her firm beliefs, she is variously referred to as the'nun','virgin Mary' and the church mouse. When she later marries Mark Anthony Oloo Sigu, they lose their first twins after an unknown abortion from anti-malarial drugs, later her husband has extra marital affairs and despite all these she lives strongly later in life.
Becky also suffers a lot in the story, she experiences pain and fear while growing up,in school she is not a performer like her sister Vera,She envies her sister and feels bad when men do not take notice of her as they do to her sister.Eventually, she dies of HIV/AIDS complications. However, even as she nears death, she does not complain and does not regret the way she has lived.
Aoro and Wandia suffer pain as they gave birth to a sickly child Daniel who has Leukemia. The sickness draws Wandia closer to God and pleads with God to heal his son..................please let my son be cured".Daniel survives and Wandia becomes a great academician.
In conclusion,it is clear from above that the pain and suffering experienced by certain characters in the story only serve to strengthen their resolve to continue with life.

- Read the extract below From the River and the Source by Margaret A.Ogola and answer the questions that follow(Solved)
The crowd hissed, such a thing was unheard of,Didn't a man own a woman's body and soul?Marriage was sacred and chik' saw to it that it remained that way through by a series of taboos that made it almost impossible to sever the union. However the insult had been great. To accuse someone of juok',witchcraft, even in jest was an unforgivable crime, and there had been precedents,if the woman and her people were determined enough to get separation. The people of Yimbo were a proud lot and their love for their daughter was known all round for they always came out in massive support of her at various ceremonies and functions. The only saving grace would be the high esteem in which they held their son in law ,Owour Kembo the chief.
"And where might he be?"inquired someone,so taken up had they been by Nyar Yimbo's oratory that they had failed to notice his absence."He went to a friends's funeral the day before yesterday and is due back today" Meanwhile i will teach that she wolf a lesson"This from Otieno her brother in law.She looked at him straight in the eye and hissed" just you dare!"He retreated at the pure venom in her eyes.Besides,he was afraid of his brother who had added scandal to all his other sins by falling to ever lay a finger on his wife.
She left without further ado and her children, forgotten in the confusion ran after her. This would never do.She turned and gently but firmly ordered them to go back and await their father's return.
"But mother......"started the argumentative Obura."No buts!just go back and do as i tell you."She left them and went swiftly on her way.The crowd stood mesmerized for a while before departing also.
