Illiteracy
- African education did not involve reading and writing but one was still regarded as educated if they had economic skills, good character and ability to apply their knowledge to solve problems

Place of learning
- Learning took place anywhere and at any time; the community served as the "classroom: and teaching/ learning took place whenever and wherever there was need.

- All adult members of the family or community were the teacher the curriculum was the life experiences and learning methodology was by social interaction and keen observation

Job oriented
- African traditional education was skill oriented; it was a practical system of education which was instilled early life aimed at equipping everyone with skills so as to earn a living e.g. farming, fishing

Flexibility in admission
- It was not strict about entry, exit and re-entry into the system:

Oral narratives
- Education was though rites of passage and oral narratives not limited to folklore, riddles, stories. dramas, histories, myths. legends, songs, proverbs and entertaining children as well as community.

- These were handed down from one generation to the next with an aim of inducting the youth into the moral, philosophical and cultural values of community

- Communalism - Collectives, co-operation and social responsibility was emphasized.
