Next came Homo erectus. It is generally thought that it originated in Africa and then spread to Europe in the north and southern Asia as far as Indonesia.

The Neanderthal man, considered to be a distinct hominid species by some and a Homo sapiens subspecies by others, were first discovered in Central Europe. They were distributed throughout Africa, the Middle East and southern Europe.
