Acetic acid and Butyric acid are metabolized throughout most of body tissues to Acetyl CoA in order to be used for energy by oxidation in the citric acid cycle. Acetic acid can also be used to synthesize lipids through Acetyl CoA. Most of the butyric acid usually comes out of the rumen as beta-hydroxybutyric acid while a small proportion comes out as acetoacetate. Both acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyric acid are referred to as ketone bodies.
Propionic acid after absorption across rumen wall is almost completely removed from portal blood by the liver. In the liver it becomes a substrate for gluconeogenesis which is absolutely critical for ruminants because almost no glucose reaches small intestine for absorption.
