1. For academic success: listening is an important means for learning at all academic levels.
Listening is the most used scholastic skill, “students listen to the equivalent of a book a
day, talk the equivalent of a book a week, read the equivalent of a book a month, and
write the equivalent of a book a year”. In fact, listening has been found to be more critical
to academic success than reading or academic aptitude.
2. To avoid disasters: the cost of poor listening can be catastrophic. Federal investigators
observe that poor listening is as much at fault as mechanical problems in airline crashes.
3. For employment success: people often indicate listening as crucial skills for leadership,
thereby linking listening with strength of character and judgment.
4. For personal happiness: it is requires a strong person to be a good listener, able to be
patient and confident enough to suspend judgement, and yet not sacrifice one’s capacity
to analyze and reply.
