Even when suitable basic organizational components are present in the school and the goals are well known, goal attainment can become elusive if appropriate means and resources to attain towards that end are lacking. By appropriate means and resources we mean the teacher and the teaching activities. The teaching that the teacher does in the school is actually what distinguishes the school as unique organization I the society. The performance of the teacher when interacting with his pupil’s forms the ‘spearhead’ towards attaining the educational the educational and socialization goals of the school; that interaction requires that the teacher should play several roles such as the instructor guide and counselor, disciplinarian, mentor and so on. Furthermore, because the roles are considered to be a critical part of the teacher’s socializing efforts, there is need to prepare, train or socialize the teacher professionally before he can engage in his teaching duties so as to enable him carry out the various roles adequately. The society uses the teacher as its representative. In the school as well as the instrument to carry out its requirement and fulfill its expectation for its growing members, the children. The quality and frequency of the teacher’s socialization affects, in turn, the socializing and teaching activities among the growing children.
The teacher’s teaching activities have, by far, the greatest importance in the school organization. These activities are viewed as socializing actions because the teacher is employed to interact with a less socially prepared section of the society: the children or pupils. Furthermore, the teaching activities are socially purposeful because they follow certain socially prescribed routines and methods with the aim of fulfilling a particular purpose in the society.
Taken in combination, the teacher and the teaching activities in the school are important and need to be given special care in any educational system. If they are faulty, poorly provided for or ill-conceived, it is the task which the society has assigned to the school organization that becomes affected. Ultimately, the society is compelled to lay the blame on and mistrust the school organization. It is because of such concerns that the combination of teachers and teaching activities has become an important part in the debate on important discussion in sociology of education
