Discuss the Educational Implications of sociological theories

The proponents of each model see a lot of inadequacies in the other, for example the critics of the consensus model see it as serving a conservative function in sociological thinking. It is argued that the model reflects attention from the facts of social tension and conflict.

The consensus theorists have different interpretations of the educational phenomena for example if a school system adopts the goal of promoting such norms as honesty, good citizenship and trustworthy does not appear to be likely to attain such goals the consensus theorists would suggest corrective measures such as counseling. They would suggest that the students responsible for indiscipline or bad behaviors should be talked to in the hope that they would reform. They would therefore suggest reformist measures.

The conflict theorist will on the other hand look at the inequalities that may be prevalent and then suggest some changes in the basic economic or social structure. They point out that in their model the basic condition of social life is dissension arising from competition for power and inequalities between groups. Life is an endless struggle between those without advantages which they wish to secure and those with privileges who either wish to get more or to prevent other from taking what is available. They argue that the consensus model distorts reality. It does not attempt to tackle the root of the problem. The other issue that is viewed differently by the proponents of this model is that of recruitment, achievement and placement in our educational institutions. In cases where selection is on the basis of ability, then people take it that it is not everyone is gifted intellectually and prizes and certificates should go only to those who do well in examinations.

The consensus theorists emphasise ability as a key element that accounts for better performance in examinations. The conflict theorists argue that some students perform better not necessarily because others are hampered by such factors as particular exam favouring the urban areas more than the rural areas. They also argue that those who perform better are in some favourable social positions that put them at an advantage whereas those who perform poorly are the disadvantaged members of the population.
