A metre rule is pivoted at the 20cm mark and it hangs at the 90cm mark from a spring balance 75g wt. Where is the centre of gravity of the metre rule if it weighs 125g?

Clockwise moments = Anticlockwise moments
Moment=force X distance

Force= (75/1000)X10=0.75N

Force= (125/1000)X10=1.25N
-Let y be the distance between pivot and centre of gravity of the metre rule.
-Distance between the pivot and the supporting spring is 90-20=70cm.

Hence

0.75x70=1.25xy

52.5 = 1.25y

y = 52.5/1.25

y = 42 cm

Position of center of gravity is 20+42 =62

C.o.g = 62 cm mark.
