1.Research Methods- specific activities designed to generate data (questionnaires, interviews, Focus groups, observations).

2.Research methodology- It is a way to systematically solve the research problem.It is also more about theory (ies) and understanding of the research and the strategies one uses to answer questions.

3.Red man and Mory- Systematized effort to gain new knowledge.Some people consider research as a movement,- from the known to the unknown- ‘voyage of discovery.’
? The systematic, rigorous investigation of a situation or problem in order to generate new knowledge or validate existing knowledge

4.Clifford Woody- research comprises ‘defining and redefining problems, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions collecting, organizing and evaluating data, making deductions and reaching conclusions; to determine whether they fit the formulated hypothesis’


5.Leedy (1997) – ‘the systematic process of collecting and analyzing information (data) in order to increase our understanding of the phenomenon with which we are concerned or interested.
Leedy goes on to state what research is not. Research is not mere:
1) information gathering (data);
2) transformation of facts from one location to the other (analysis);
3) rummaging (look through, fumble etc) for information; and 4) Catchword to get information (new knowledge).
