a) Lectures
As we progress with lectures in our respective disciplines a number of unresolved problems are identified and printed out. For example, several theories can be raised, a number of which are yet to be tested in different context through research. While there are several major sources of problems , the most meaningful ones are generally those derived from theories .There are for example many educationally relevant theories such as the human capital theory of investment in education by Adams Smith (1976) which asserts that training of employee s is one way of investing in human capital in that training will latter raise the employees productivity. Such a theory is for research as that entitled ‘training and productivity. Class discussion, seminars and out of class exchange of ideas with fellow students and lecturers unveils a wealth of stimulating problems to be solved through research studies.
b) Teaching experience
Many research problems and hence topic or title results from a potential researcher having experienced some problems in personal life or society. Current problems in ECDE.
c) Mass media
These are communication channels with large number of audience and /or viewpoints and include newspapers, radios. televisions and internets .For example in the recent past years news papers have raised the problem of low salaries among teachers in Kenya and researchers may want to study the effects of that problem , say on employees performance in which case a topic such as reward and employees performance can be formed.
d) Scholarly literature
Scholarly or academic literature refer to text books , professional and academic journals , and research reports dissertations or thesis . Some text books have chapters heading related to variables and hence suggesting academic research topic or tittles.
e) Consultation with instructors.
Consultation with the course instructors is helpful. Although the student should not expect problem to be assigned, consultation and discussion with facilitators is desirable. For example, the first time beginner is not expected to present a completely acceptable problem .Thus they can always be advised to clarify their thinking, achieve a sense of focus and develop a manageable problem from one that may be vague and complex.
f) Practical Issues
Every society is always faced with many burning issues which are hard to completely explain for ,for instance cost sharing in universities , gender and women status in. A researcher can therefore decide to take one of these issues and investigate it logically with a view of finding a solution to the problem.
