Population -any group of individuals, objects or items that have one or more characteristics in common that are of interest to the researcher (Best and Khan (1995)
ABA 431- Research Methods for Business Management Page 32 of 46
? eg. JOOUST consist of a population of 7000 students

Sample- a small proportion of a population selected for observation and analysis the basis of which inferences can be made about its characteristics.

Sampling – Procedure a researcher uses to gather data for study or process of selecting a number of individuals or objects from a population for study
? Eg. From a Population of 7000 students, we may select samples from Students taking BEd(Arts)
? Samples should not be selected haphazardly, they are chosen in a systematically random way, so that chance or the operation of probability can be utilised. A sample is drawn from a population which refers to all possible cases of what one is interested in studying.
? To select a good sample, you need to define clearly the population from which the sample is to be drawn.

Sampling Design- that part of research plan that indicates how cases are to be selected for observations.

Sample Frame ? List of all people or units in the population from which a sample is drawn ( eg. Names, age etc of students taking BEd(Arts)

Sampling Error
? Difference of result between a sample and that of the whole population

Representative Sample ? One which reflects the population accurately, showing the same distribution of characteristics or variables as the whole population
