a) Quota Sampling- dividing population into strata eg. age ,gender, geographical region. Total sample allocated in proportion of their size. Sample then selected haphazardly
? Regularly used in market research and opinion polling
? Like stratified sampling, the sample chosen includes certain proportion of particular variables (eg. gender, age-group, ethnicity ,socio-economic group)
? Unlike stratified sample, there is no random sampling stage; the choice of respondent is upto the interviewer provided the profile or quota is accurate

b) Convenience Sampling- respondents met haphazardly (use of volunteers) eg. when just walking by or show a special interest in your research
? sample chosen for ease of convenience rather than through random sampling
? Often used in pilot studies or a short term projects where there is insufficient time to construct a probability sample
? When used, the result cannot be generalized to the population

c) Snowball Sampling ? Similar to convenience sampling where the researcher contacts an initial group of people relevant for research then uses the group to contact others
? No sample frame, therefore not random
? Sometimes difficult to predefine the population
? Often used in qualitative approaches

d) Purposive Sampling-purposely target a group believed to be reliable for the study. Can be done alongside probability sampling
? Use of researcher’s own judgement to select sample
? Often used with small sample populations within qualitative research (eg. case studies)
? Cases may be chosen because of being special or unique in a particular way
? Does not yield any statistical references about the population
