a)Recall;
There are three main categories of recall:
-Instant recall – immediate records, focussed on specific topics, made regularly.
-Periodic recall – records of defined period, usually from 24 hours to a year, shorter periods are best for recording general topics, while longer periods can be used for specific topics such as illness.
-Timeline – often used in participatory rural appraisal (PRA) to record key events in the life history of an individual, a family or a community.
b)Observation.
Is the basic technique of data collection. Observations should be recorded continuously and it is advisable for researchers to keep a field diary where day to day observations are recorded.
c)An interview.
Is an oral administration of a questionnaire or an interview schedule. Interviews are therefore face-to-face encounters. To obtain accurate information through interviews, a researcher needs to obtain the maximum cooperation from respondents.
d)Use of Questionnaires.
There are two types of questions that are used in questionnaires.
-Structured or closed-ended questions– these refer to questions which are accompanied by a list of all possible alternatives from which respondents select the answer that best describes their situation.
-Unstructured or open-ended questions- This refers to questions that give the respondent complete freedom of response.
e)Focus group discussions.
Focus group discussions should be used for the following reasons;
i)Group interaction – interaction between respondents will generally stimulate richer responses and allow new and valuable thoughts to emerge.
ii)Observation – the researcher can observe the discussion and gain first hand insights into the respondent’s behaviors, attitudes, language (including body language) and feelings.
iii)Cost and timing – FGD can be completed more quickly and generally less expensive than a series of in-depth interviews.
