In the story,a mother and her daughter are on a journey from a rural setting to town to seek honorable burial rites for her son, killed in the town. The story highlights poverty and adverse whether conditions that mother and daughter are exposed to.
The mother and the daughter are the only passengers in the lone third class car.Since the smoke of the locomotive keeps coming through the window, the girl leaves her seat and puts the only things they have with them down;a plastic sack with some things to eat and a bouquet of flowers wrapped in a newspaper. Both are in severe and poor mourning clothes.
The woman seems too old to be the girls mother because of the blue veins in her eyelids and her small, soft and shapeless body. When the train reaches the two identical towns ,the girl takes off her shoes, apparently an indication that she is not used to wearing shoes.
When they reach home of the priest,a plump, older woman appears with pale skin and hair the co-lour .Her eyes seem too small behind her thick glasses, the waiting room in the priests house is said to be poor but neatly arranged, with a primitive type writer. As the woman and the girl continue with the journey, the air becomes humid and they can not feel the sea breeze any more. Then,a stifling blast of smoke comes in the car widow. In the identical towns,a band plays a timely tune under the oppressive sun.At another end of town, the plantations end in a plain which is cracked from the drought.
In conclusion therefore, the mother and daughter experience a lot of suffering due to poverty and unfriendly weather conditions.
