-Damage is by the larvae
-Hatched larvae burrow in the petiole, until they reach the ground level of the plant where they feed on the stem tissue
-The stem swells, cracks and splis as the larvae pupates
-The plants start to wither when roots die
-When there’s rain the plants forms adventous roots
-Leaves turns yellow and the plant gives droughted appearance
-Adults are black flies and lays eggs on seedlings
-Pupa is mainly dark brown or black, and pupation takes place in swollen stem.
- The plant is stunted.
