(i) Initiation is a communal affair while baptism is a personal affair.

(ii) Initiation rites is compulsory for people in a given age-set but baptism can be administered to people of all ages.

(iii) There are various forms of initiation rites in African communities but baptism is the only initiation rite for the Christians.

(iv) Physical pain is endured during traditional African initiation which is absent in Christian baptism.

(v) Initiation rites specifically prepare the youth for marriage whereas baptism is not attached to marriage.

(vi) Baptism is practiced by Christians in obedience to Christ's command but initiation is practiced in obedience to the ancestors' command.

(vii) Baptism can be carried out to any willing person irrespective of age but initiation rite is mostly done to those who were above fifteen years in some African communities.
