1. Unicellular (simplest form) – which may be motile or non motile (coccoid)

2. Colonial forms – An aggregation of cells acting as a single unit
Cells are interdependent

3. Filamentous thallus
(i) Simple unbranched filament
(ii) Branched thallus

4. Siphonaceous – Plant body is coenocytic (multinudeate and aseptate)
- Form septa at the time of reproduction

5. Parenchymatous thallus
- These are the most advanced among the algae
Some like heterocysts fix nitrogen into the soil (a filamentous group).
