Biotechnology is tool used in industrial microbiology which uses microbes to produce large quantities of various substances NB: fermentation is a metabolic process in which carbohydrate and related compounds are broken down anaerobically to produce energy.

b) Microorganisms in agriculture
These are microorganism involved in soil fertility as well as in supply of plant materials e.g. water and minerals

c) Sanitation and water purity/sanitary analysis of water
- Sanitation is the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of human urine and faces, also refers to the maintenance of hygienic conditions through services such as garbage collection and waste water disposal. (Solid waste and liquid waste disposal).
- Monitoring and detecting indicator and disease causing microorganism are major parts of sanitation microbiology.
- Bacterial from the intestinal tract do not survive in aquatic environment or under physiological stress and they lose their ability to form colonies on media differential and selective media may be used as indicator organisms
