Euthanasia comes from two Greek words ‘eu’ which means goo and ‘thenatos’ which means death. Euthanasia means good death.
It is the deliberate ending of life to relieve suffering and thereby allowing the patient to die in dignity and peace. Euthanasia is the intentional killing by act or omission of a dependent human being for his or her alleged benefit. Euthanasia goes against everything that the field of medicine has tried to produce through centuries and millenia of research. Medical care is intended to save a person from dying at all costs, whereas euthanasia is intended to terminate something's life at all costs. This makes euthanasia a very controversial idea and procedure.
The people who support euthanasia say that it is always a person's personal right to choose to die and when to die. They also say that it should be legal for another individual to assist the person in achieving death without criminal liability.
The people against euthanasia say that a desire for death is a product of abnormal logic and the person should receive psychological therapy instead of assistance and legal protection in dying. They commonly believe that assisting someone in dying is entirely unethical and should be a crime punishable by prison time.
The act is also called “Mercy Killing”, which is an expression or manifestation of the desire of the doctor to help bring about the death of a patient by denying him/her the very treatment which could prolong his/her life but not lessen the pains of that condition or generate from the ailment.
Euthanasia may be passive in a situation where the patient is allowed or made to die either by withholding treatment or by discontinuing such treatment once began. Euthanasia can also an omission, such as intentionally causing death by withholding or withdrawing necessary and ordinary (usual and customary) care or food and water. This is sometimes referred to as indirect or passive euthanasia.
It could also be active when a positive step is taken to terminate life, such as the administration of a toxic substance or the injection of an air bubble into the blood stream. Euthanasia can be an action (act of commission), i.e. lethal injection, shooting, smothering. This is sometimes referred to as direct or positive euthanasia.
Euthanasia may also be classified as either:
a) Voluntary, where the patient himself expresses his desire for his life to end. Euthanasia can be voluntary in cases where the person gives consent to be killed. This euthanasia can be in form of assisted suicide - Suicide is the taking of one's own life. In assisted suicide, which is a form of euthanasia, someone provides an individual with the information, guidance, and means to take his own her own life
(b.) Involuntarily, in the case where the patient has not indicated such a choice but the doctor out of his own volition terminates the life of the patient. The person who is killed is incapable of giving consent or does not give consent.
- Which ever reason or justifications put forward to support the practice of euthanasia, the act is tantamount to terminating life.
- The pain of suffering which pro-euthanasia seeks to remove from the life of a patient could be part of God’s plan to strengthen the faith of the subject in order to equip him/her for the future assignment.
The scripture suggest that the physical comfort is not to be the primary goal of man or woman suffering although may be associated with evil serves the purpose of purifying the life of a person.
