According to this model, situational interest provides a basis for four development of individual interest

PHASE ONE:TRIGGERED SITUATIONAL INTEREST
Refers to psychological state of interest that results from short term changes in effective and cognitive processing. It can be influenced by environmental or context features.

PHASE TWO:MAINTAINED SITUATIONAL INTEREST
Is a psychological state of interest that is subsequent to a triggered state
It involves focused attention and persistence over time. It relies on external support to some extent
It also maintains through personal involvement
Learning environment should provide meaningful and personally involving activities e.g. projects

PHASE THREE:EMERGING INDIVIDUAL INTEREST
Is a psychological state of interest as well as the beginning phase of a relatively enduring predisposition to see repeatedly engagement with particular content over time
It is based on previous engagement
It is characterized by positive feelings, stored knowledge and stored values
It is typically but not entirely self generated
It may or not lead to well developed interest

PHASE FOUR:WELL DEVELOPED INDIVIDUAL INTEREST
Is a psychological state of interest as well as relatively enduring predisposition to seek repeatedly re-engagement with particular content over time
It is characterized by more positive feelings, more stored knowledge and values for particular content It is typically but not exclusively self generated
Learning environment should provide opportunities that lead to knowledge building e.g. new challenges
