1. PHOBIC DISORDER(PHOBIAS)
These are strong, irrational or unrealistic fears of certain objects or situation
Objects that cause phobia are classified into four;
- Fear of particular situations e.g. heights
- Fear of features of the natural environment e.g. water, thunderstorm
- fear of injury or blood
- fear of animals or insects
EXAMPLES OF PHOBIAS
I. Agoraphobia- fear of the open places
II. Social phobias- fear of social interactions particularly with strangers in which a person might get embarrassed
III. specific phobias
2. GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER
This is a chronic ongoing sense of tension that is not attached to specific situations or subjects
Also referred to free floating anxiety
It makes the person uncomfortable because of his never ending presence
A person with anxiety disorder is always worried that something bad may happen
3. PANIC ANXIETY DISORDER(P.A.D)
Occurs suddenly and unpredictable. They are much more intense. It is characterized by sudden episodes of extreme anxiety.
Persons with P.A.D are sensitive to small fluctuations in the performance of their hearts and level of carbon dioxide in their blood. They interpret this normal fluctuations in catastrophic ways.
4. POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
Is a severe anxiety disorder that occurs to people who have been exposed to traumatic events e.g. rape
It has four major symptoms:
- A person experiences severe symptoms of anxiety disorder that were not present before the trauma
- The person relieves the trauma recurrently and flashbacks and dreams
- The person becomes numb to the world and avoids stimuli that serve as reminders to the trauma
- He experiences intense survivor guilt in instances where others were killed and the victim survived
5. OBSESSIVE COMPARATIVE DISORDER
Obsessions are repetitive and welcome anxiety provoking thoughts that seem uncontrollable and foreign to the mind
Comparisons are irresistible urges to engage in repetitive behavior.
Comparisons are performed to reduce anxiety associated with obsessions
They include:(most common comparisons and obsessions)
- contamination
- pathological doubt
- variety thoughts
O.C.D is said to be caused by the deficiency of the neuro-transmitters serotonin
