Effects on urban areas

(i) Unemployment.
(ii) Increase in crime.
(iii) Increase in Immorality. Eg. - prostitution
- HIV / AIDS and STIs
(iv) Development of poor housing - slums (shanties)

(v) Competition (strains) for social amenities eg. Hospitals , schools etc.
(vi) Overcrowding
(vii) Environmental problems e.g. air pollution and water pollution.
(viii) Increase in labour supply.

Effects on rural areas:

(i) Reduced pressure on land.
(ii) Shortage of labour (negatively affecting agriculture).
(iii) Improved economic conditions (reduction in production).
(iv) Reversal of roles.
(v) Improved agricultural production (introduction of new farming
methods).

Positive effects of immigration

- Foreign investments which offer employment opportunities.

Negative effects of immigration
- Influx of people from war-torn countries encourages the movement of
illegal arms into the countries which are used by criminals
- Refugees in our country affects the environment as they clear forests for
firewood.
- The foreign cultures of these people end up affecting our cultures
negatively.
