1. Counseling is a professional service provided by trained and competent persons to an individuals or group who seek help on problems which they cannot handle.
2. Counseling involves both the counselor and the client where the client determines and sets the direction and the goals to be achieved. The counselor uses his training and expertise to help the client accomplish these goals. Counseling is concerned with decision-making skills, acquisition of problem solving skills individually or in a group.
3. Counseling is a teaching – learning process where clients learn new behaviors and attitudes. It involves changes and modification of ways of thinking and doing things. Counseling therefore affects the client’s attitudes beliefs and personal adaptations to the cultural environment in which the client finds himself.
4. Counseling is a dynamic relationship between the counselor and the client where the counselor establishes rapport but maintains psychological distance to avoid emotional involvement
5. The purpose of counseling is to provide;
a. Effective learning conditions, which facilitate voluntary change on the part of the client.
b. Conditions where the client is treated as an independent, responsible individuals capable of making his own choices under appropriate conditions.
6. In counseling it is the client who knows what is good for him and the counselor is a facilitator in the process of growth.
7. Counseling is conducted in private and the discussions are confidential.
