Stockholm conference.
This conference was held in Stockholm Sweden, 1972. The name of conference was United Nations Conference on Human Environment. It was the first of series of the international conferences that formed a milestone (significant event) in history of environmental education. The conference was held by United Nations because many people were concerned about the environmental situation at that time (1960-1970).
• Developed countries were concerned about (i) environmental pollution arising from industrialization, and especially that of trans boundary pollution and (ii) conservation of the earth resources.
• Developing country had a different agenda; their problems were clean water, human settlement, disposal of human wastes and elimination of poverty.
a) The outcomes of the Stockholm conference were:
• Formation of United Nations Environmental Program me (UNEP) with its headquarters’ in Nairobi, Kenya. The role of UNEP was to coordinate environmental matters among the UN agencies and to catalyses actions in the member countries.
• The UNEP was to work towards educating people on simple steps to take to manage and control the environment. To achieve this UNEP cooperated with UNESCO in attempting to establish environmental education at International level.
After undertaking investigations and research on the feasibility of implementing environmental education internationally the UNESCO-UNEP organised a workshop in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1975, to exchange views and possibilities of establishing an International Education Program me (IEEP).
b) The outcomes of the Belgrade workshop were:
Out of this workshop Belgrade charter was formed, which outlined the global framework for environmental education. The charter singled out the goals, objectives, principles and target groups/audiences for effective environmental education programme.
NB: The audience for environmental education is the general public of all age categories.

Goals
• To foster clear awareness of, the concern about economic, social, political and ecological interdependence in urban and rural areas.
• To provide every one with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, values and attitudes, commitments and skills needed to protect and improve the environment.
• To create new patterns of behavior of individuals, groups and society as whole towards the environment
Objectives
-Awareness: to help social groups and individuals acquire an awareness and sensitivity to the total environment and its allied problems;
-Knowledge: To help social groups and individuals gain a variety of experience in, and acquire a basic understanding of, the environment and its associated problems;
-Attitude: to help social groups and individuals acquire a set of values and feelings of concern for the environment, and the motivation for actively participating in environmental improvement and protection;
-Skills: to help social groups and individuals acquire the skills for identifying and solving environmental problems; and
Participation: to help social groups and individuals with an opportunity to be actively involved at all levels in working towards resolution of environmental problems
