1. Species can be lost through natural selection e.g. if environmental conditions change and species are unable to adapt to changing conditions some species can become extinct (permanent loss of a species)

2. Too much predation or competition

4. Through human activities, this is the major cause of species loss e.g. it is estimated that about 100 species are lost per day through human activities, while other are endangered and others are threatened
