A very large basin-shaped depression on the summit of a volcano.

Modes of Formation

Violent Explosion
- Gases and water heated by magma expand.
- They force their way through a vent.
- The rocks at the top of the volcano are blown off forming a large depression e.g. Nyirarongo Caldera in DRC and Sabiro Caldera in Uganda.
