Number seven lives in an institution offering shelter and support to the people who are ,mentally ill-the asylum. He is the only inmate allowed outside the compound every evening. This is privileged that has been granted by the doctors for his obedience and calm disposition. He unfolds his umbrella every evening and walks outside the compound hoping that it will rain.Rain has evaded this area for several month.Whenever he sees swelling clouds that hover over the asylum,he would unfold the umbrella and hope that it will rain.He has not had any visitor in many years and no one knows how he acquired the umbrella that other people envy. The umbrella becomes his companion, the inmates think that it is the most beautiful thing in the asylum. Each wants to hold it and feel its beauty.
In many nights, number seven sees the image of a child.During such moments he watches the child being disturbed by unpleasant dreams. He them comforts the child to go back to sleep and promises to be by the child's side. This happens night after night. When the barber asks whether it will rain,he would assure him that it would rain soon.He sits on his favorite bench that is between the asylum gates and the wall where the lane end to have a conversation with a puny little who is pessimistic about rains .Number seven tells him that someday it will rain and the whole place will smell of moist and wild flowers. The doctors tell number 7 that it is his last day in the wards. He can not sleep that night and so he narrates a story to the child who falls asleep.
The next morning,he wakes up to a strange smell that wafts into his cell from the compound. He steps out and finds it is cloudy. It had rain the previous night. He finds a new set of clothes on the doorstep. He is also given a bag containing an extra set of clothes,a small tin case and some money. He changes, spreads his umbrella and walks out of the cell. From the gate,he wonders which path to take. The puny little fellow is gone with the rain .He sees a road that is waiting for him on the other side.
l rain and he gives him hope that it will rain soon.
He tells the puny little fellow to stop being pessimistic and believe that it will rain soon."......I thought you believed in hope and Nature's miracles.Don't you believe that someday it will rain here and that the earth will turn moist and smell of wild flowers?"In the end his hope is fulfilled. It rains, even though this happens at night.
