Colonial administration represented by the DO and DC and their askaris constitute the agents from without. With the coming of the white , the mode of dressing change from skins that would cover only the loins ,to pairs of long shirts and a singlet.

The colonial administration replaces the hereditary chieftainancy. In spite of the DC's decision ,it was only a matter of time before the hereditary chieftainancy were done away with totally. It was a changing world.

Religion on the other hand ,and in particular Christianity brings about change in a very significant way.For example ,Alour Christian Mission Provides refuge to those who are oppressed by other members of the society in the traditional set up. Akoko and Nyabera seek help from Alour Mission when life in their matrimonial homes became unbearable. The faith declares some aspects of culture that is not acceptable and that is why Nyabera feels guilty and her mother prays a lot when the former returns to her matrimonial home to try and get a child with the man who had inherited her after her husbands death.

Internal agent may question elements of tradition and do things that have not been done before. Akoko, for example ,refuses to submit to her brother in law's greedy and crafty intimidation and seeks justice from the colonial government
