Living under despotic regimes can never be easy.People suffer a lot. They lack basic freedoms and are under the mercy of their leaders decisions..

As a form of dealing with any form of dissent in the society, people are killed in cold blood. Adika a university student is killed during the student's demonstrations. His parents Nina and Doga are determined to go on with the shaving ceremony, and due to them being adamant, they are later killed inside their hut. Kabito is also eliminated through a planned road accident over a personal grudge with Mulili. Kabito is allegedly said to have spilled the secrets of Boss and said that he hid money in foreign countries, that Boss tried to rape Regina and many other allegations. This is a sign of a government that has no respect for human life.

The government has employed a number of expatriates ,these people are said to to take jobs that the local people can also take. This leads to qualified personnel being denied employment opportunities.

Innocent people are unfairly put behind bars. Mosese Wa Tonga is being imprisoned and jailed for speaking at during Adikas funeral, while Jere on the other hand maintained that Nina and Doga should be allowed to have a shaving ceremony, against the wishes of the powers of Boss.

The people's intelligence is insulted by the use of the sycophants to keep the government propped up. Mulili has to have his way in the entertainment committee meeting, forcing the other members to plan to have school children line up the streets to welcome a visiting head of state. This is in spite of the fact that examinations are in progress.

Those governed by inept regimes are bound to suffer all manner of injustices. The people of Kafira are plagued by many ills that are vested upon them by the government.
