The Caucasian Chalk Circle are seen as two entirely separate stories, which are very much connected through Grusha's and Adzaks sense of justice. While the character of Grusha represents compassion, Adzak represents justice and through their meeting at the end of the play, fairness prevails .It is compassion that inspires justice.

Adzak's inner sense of immoral compassion is characterized by cynicism, selfish and destructive behavior. He has so far judged in a reckless manner, taking bribes from the rich and judging fairly for the poor, but when Grusha boldly attacks him and she shames him, unearthing his humanity, enabling him to act as a fair judge. Grusha tells him that his justice is crooked an that he is corrupt.

After Adzak is attacked by Grusha,he suspends the case for a short time and speaks to her, saying he has seen she has a soft spot for justice. He even tells her that he does not believe it's her child, but wonders whether she doesn't want the best for the child. He quickly realizes that his duty as a judge is to choose a mother for the child, rather than determine who gave birth to him.So he devises The Caucasian Chalk Circle test, which sees Grusha to keep the child since she loved Michael. It is no doubt that Natella only wanted to use Michael as a doorway to riches. It was only just to allow the one with compassion to have the custody of the child.

The playwright uses the eternal, universal theme of motherly love to depict essential human kindness. Grusha makes hard choices in the play;caring for Michael means responsibility and sacrifice. She treats the Governor's baby as her own ,even though it is not in her best interest to do so.Her decision to care for him shows us the human instinct of compassion, goodness and love. She risks her life crossing the bridge and chooses to marry Jussup even when still engaged to Simon Shashava,in order to save Michael.

Adzak questions Grusha and discovers that she was forced to marry Jussup to protect Michael. He also learns that she and Simon are in love ,even though Simon is not her husband. Adzak divorces Grusha from the marriage of convenience and sets her free to marry Simon.Because of his love for Grusha,Simon stands by her during the court case and eventually justice is served when the court sets Grusha free to marry her.
