1. Hearing

This is the physiological aspect of listening. It is a non-selective process of sound waves impinging on the ears and the ear responding to those sound waves that fall within a certain frequency range and are sufficiently loud. It is also is also influenced by background noise if on the same frequency as the speech is said to be masked. If not, it is called ‘white noise’. Other factors that influence hearing include auditory fatigue, which is caused by continuous exposure to the same tone or loudness.

2. Attending

This is making the decision whether to focus on what was heard or not. This changes the listening process from a physiological one to a psychological one. An individual’s needs, wants, desires and interests determine what is attended to. E.g. If you are hungry you are most likely to attend to the message about restaurants rather than one on the importance of communication.

3. Understanding

It involves recognition of the grammatical rules used to create that message.
It is dependent on ones understanding of the source of the message i.e.is the person sincere, friendly etc. The social context, such time and place, of the communication also affects understanding. For example, it helps us to decide whether to take a friend’s insults seriously or as a joke.

4. Remembering

The ability to remember information once it is understood depends on a number of factors such as the number of times that information is repeated, the quantity of information to be stored in the brain and whether the information can be ‘rehearsed’ or not
People remember only about half of what they hear immediately after hearing it. Within two months, half of what remained is forgotten, reducing it all to about 25%of the original message
