Owour Kembo and Otieno Kembo, though brothers ,have different values and outlooks in life. This causes jealousy even hatred.
When Owour is asked to pay two and half time the usual bride price for Akoko,he agrees to do so and instructs his spokesman not to bargain. This upsets his brother Otieno who thinks that the chief must be crazy.
While Owour finds Akoko very beautiful,Otieno can only think of her as a brazen lass not worth the thirty head. His feelings are caused mainly by his attitude toward women -the thinking that all women are the same but also the fear that there might not be enough cattle for himself to get married. Owour,on the other hand ,believes that women are not the same and he thinks Akoko is worth the unusually high bride price.
In fact he never marries another woman while Otieno marries one shiftless one shiftless woman after another.Although Otieno has four wives ,he desires his brother's wife.
Otieno continues with the rivalry even after his brothers death .He robs his brother's wife not only of his late brother's wealth but also her personal property.
He also seeks to rob his brothers son Owang Sino,of the right to become chief in his father's place.Due to the rivalry,Otieno does not inherit Akoko and does not become guardian of the grandson. The narrator observes that animosity must have run very deep in the family.
