The grief and loneliness the woman is experiencing is as a result of the murder of her son Carlos.
Her pride and dignity is shown in the way she carries herself in the bus.We are told that 'she was riding with her spinal column braced firmly against the back of the seat...'She tells the girl '.......above all no crying.'She does not want them embraced or looking weak.

When she is asking for the priest,she talks in a calm determined manner.When the priest asks if she was mother to the thief killed last week,she stares at the priest with quiet self-control.She does not get intimidated.She is proud to refer to her slain son as my only boy.She has brought flowers so that she can send off her son in dignity.
