- Brooder house should be empty at least two weeks before the chicks come in.
- Clean and disinfect the house before bringing in the chicks.
- Put litter in the brooder one day before the chicks arrive.
- Litter should be clean and free from parasites.
- Turn on heat source a day before chicks arrive and windows should be closed so that
chicks are put into a warm house.
- Chick mash is first spread on the news paper to train chicks to peck.
- A reflector may be placed above the heat source to regulate temperature in the brooder.
- In the first 2 – 3 weeks temperature is regulated to 30-320C .
- Progressively reduce temperature to 200C by the 4th week.
- Provide feed troughs and water troughs.
- Brooder should be well lit.
- Avoid corners in the brooder.
- Brooder should be well ventilated for circulation of air.
