(i) Predisposing factors
- Injury to the udder or teats allow entry of micro-organisms.
- Poor milking hygiene / dirty milking sheds that encourage breeding of bacteria.
- Incomplete milking left milk in the teat act as a culture media for bacterial growth.
- High milk producers are more prone to mastitis than low milk producers.
- Old cows are more prone to diseases than young ones.
- Pendulous udder are liable to mechanical injuries.

(ii) Symptoms
- Swollen or inflamed udder. Animal rejects milking or suckling for kicks due to pain.
- Milk contains pus, blood, thick clots or turns waterly.
-Fever
- Reduced milk production
- Blocked teat canal by clots
- Death of infected quarter may result.

(iii) Control measures
- Practice farm hygiene during milking
- Milk infected cow last and mastitic quarter last and discard the milk.
- Dip teats into a teat dip containing antiseptic after milking.
- Treat infected cows to avoid spread of disease.
- Infuse antibiotic into teat canal at the end of drying off period / practice dry
cow therapy.
- Apply milking jelly / salve after milking to prevent drying and cracking of teats.
- Use proper milking technique / squeeze method and complete milking.
- Remove sharp objects from grazing and milking areas to prevent injuries.
- Test for mastitis in each cow before milking to avoid spread of healthy ones.
- Cull animals which do not respond to treatment.
